A Taste Of The High Country – Mar 2022

Indulgence

Pairing music, wine and food in the intimacy of the forest.

March 19, 7PM
Chisel Creek Ranch
Can music describe wines? Express the sensations and feelings that arise from tasting a light, effervescent sparkling wine or a sensual, full-body red? Or that sweet, delicate dessert wine? Wine, like music, is art. One is experienced through taste (wine), the other through hearing (music). But what if we could experience music through taste and wine through hearing?

A few months ago, the Land’s End Chamber Ensemble performed a concert, including the rendition of a particularly hot tango. After the performance, I suggested to one of the musicians, Beth Root-Sandvoss, to consider creating an experience that would engage all of our senses by pairing music, wine and food. The affair could be set in dimmed lights and bohemian style decore. I did not expect them to take me seriously.

A few weeks later, Beth called me to discuss the idea. Soon, we started creating an evening that would cater to all of our senses. An evening that would invite guests to experience the relationships between our environment, music, wine and food.

Indulgence is an artistic experience – a pure indulgence for our senses, designed for the sole purpose of enjoying the moment to its fullest. It is our way to celebrate the eminence of Spring, the renewal of life and forget about the vagaries of the last two years.

The performance will take place at Chisel Creek Ranch, a private home of rustic post and beam architecture tucked in the trees on the edge of Kananaskis in Bragg Creek. Guests will arrive at sunset and be welcomed in an intimate, dimly lit decor complete with a grand piano, tables for two, and a limited number of groups of four or six. The program will consist of three acts of music and wine paired with light food, each introduced through spoken words.

This event is an indulgence for the artists to challenge themselves to express tasted sensations and aromatics through a selection of known and not-so-well-known musical pieces. It is also an indulgence for the guests to awaken their senses and take pleasure in the moment.

Beth is the cellist, and Susanne Ruberg-Gordon the pianist. They are professional musicians of international calibre with several award nominations and a healthy collection of CD recordings. You can find out more about them by visiting their ensemble’s website www.landsendensemble.ca. I will be your sommelier for the evening, pairing wine with food and introducing them through spoken words. You can find out more about me on www.tastingpleasures.ca

In a world where we eat mindlessly with our phone set next to the cutlery, we forget how to savour the moment. We invite you to leave that phone at home, settle in and feast your senses.
