Emergency Preparedness and Personal Safety talks return in May. We have six sessions planned with spots still open. The first three are facilitated by the Town of Diamond Valley Emergency Management, starting with Wildfires and FireSmart (Monday, May 4, 7:00 pm). This session will look at how wildfires behave and outline what practical FireSmart steps you can take to protect your home and property. A new addition to the line-up this year is Flooding and Floodplain Awareness (Wednesday, May 6, 7:00 pm). This talk will look at the flood risk profile and the factors that influence seasonal water levels in our region. Find out how to recognize changing conditions outdoors and what steps to take if water levels rise unexpectedly. Another new session is Communications and Evacuations (Saturday, May 9, 1:00 pm). Come and learn how an evacuation unfolds and how emergency information is communicated to help reduce stress and confusion when it matters most. Other sessions in the series include: We can do it! Adult Children with Aging Parents (Saturday, May 23, 2:00 pm). Learn about eldercare planning from Lorrie Morales. This session is Intended for either the aging parent or their adult children, or both together. If you have ever wondered what conversations you should be having with the other generation before eldercare is urgently needed, then this workshop can help! Registration is strongly recommended as this class requires a minimum number of registrations to run.
The series finishes up with two events on Saturday, May 30. Standing Strong Together: How Insurance Helps Our Community Weather Life’s Storms (Saturday, May 30 10:30 am). Facilitated by insurance experts from Western Financial who will share how insurance can be a safety net when nature throws us a curveball and how to keep our small rural communities resilient.
Our local RCMP detachment will present Online Safety and Fraud (May 30, 1-2:30 pm). Learn about the current online environment and possible dangers and how to avoid them.
Once you have become safe and secure in the month of May, you may want to venture out and explore. Our bikes are out of storage, have been tuned up by our bike mechanic and are ready to hit the road again. Bikes can be checked out on your library card, you just have to complete a waiver that will cover you for the 2026 season. Waivers are available online or at the desk. Helmets and locks are provided if needed.
Mark June 6 on your calendar for our annual used book sale. As part of the festivities on Discovery Day we will be set up in front of the library. All sales are by donation.
