Sheep River Library – May 2024

As we head into the spring/summer seasons where we almost have a long weekend a month, we remind readers that the library is closed for only the statutory day of every long weekend from May through October. This means that the library is open on Saturdays of those weekends from 10 am to 5 pm. Open/ closed hours will be posted on the outside signs, our website and Facebook page and phone message.

The Friday before the May long weekend (May 18-20) sees the return of our Bikes For All program. You can borrow several bicycles of various types and sizes until the end of September. If you want to cycle around town, bike Friendship Trail or head up to Kananaskis Country, we have you covered. You will need to sign a waiver before you cycle away; it will cover you for the entire season. We wish to express a huge thank you to Dave Macaulay who volunteers as our bike mechanic to keep the bicycles in fine running order.

It feels a bit hopeful to be talking about summer when we still have snow in the forecast, but nevertheless, we will be running summer day camps at the library in July, in partnership with other community groups.

Renee Boehmer is offering the Kananaskis Kids’ Choir Camp from July 15-19. If your child likes to sing, then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Our week-long summer program will include music education, fun games, songs and a performance at the end of the week to perform for parents. Renee Boehmer, the choir director, has taught music to AMAZING children (piano/ voice/theory/performance) for over 35 years and has worked with many AWESOME choirs. The session for children ages 5-9 is from 10 am to 12:15 pm and children ages 10+ will start at 1 pm-3:15 pm. The fee for choir camp is $75 per child.

Diamond Valley Youth Foundation is running an Arts/Sports camp under the direction of Kym Wilkie from July 22-26.

Nikolas Cavalheiro Zetouni from Next Gen EduCare is running a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) camp from July 29-Aug 2 for children in Grades 3-5. Each day the children will experience a different type of technology such as Scratch, MakeyMakey, Lego SPIKE, Sphero Minis, Virtual Reality and Snap Circuits. The day is composed of three sessions which comprise of introducing the technology, a guided project and completing a challenge.

Registration for these camps opens May 1. Costs and other details will be on our website as they become avalable. We wish to extend a huge thank you to Diamond Valley Youth Foundation and Foothills Energy Co-op for their generous donations to make these camps possible.
