Sheep River Library – Apr 2024

Every April, Volunteer Canada leads the National Volunteer Week (NVW) campaign. This year, NVW is happening April 14–20, 2024. NVW provides a chance to celebrate the vibrancy and impact of volunteerism in our communities and nationwide. This year’s theme is “Every Moment Matters,” emphasizing the importance of each volunteer and their unique contributions, particularly now, when support is needed more than ever. The Town of Diamond Valley will be celebrating the many volunteers in our community with a reception on Thursday April 18 from 5-7 pm at the library. If you are a community volunteer, you are welcome to attend this appreciation event.

Need a hand with a basic tax return? If your maximum income level is $35,000 for a single person, $45,000 for a couple or $40,000 for a single parent, then you qualify for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program provided by Diamond Valley FCSS on Thursday, April 11 at the library between 10 am and 4 pm. This program offers free tax filing for residents with a simple tax situation. Qualified volunteers will prepare and e-file your taxes on a first come, first served basis.

Cathy Hern is the artist currently displaying her work in our gallery space. Cathy will be hosting an art reception on Friday, April 19 from 2 – 4 pm. This is a great chance to both view the art and speak to the artist.

Diamond Valley Sustainable Living Centre will be presenting a Credit Score Workshop at the library on Saturday, April 27 from 10 am to 12 pm. Come and find out what credit scores are, how they are used, and how you can improve your score. This will be a join sponsorship of the DVSLC, Foothills Energy Co-op, and ATB. For more information contact DVSLC at https://dvslc.ca.

Thank you to the Legendary Leos ( Junior Lions) who donated money for the purchase of teen board games. These games will make their appearance in the Juvenile collection very soon and will also be used on the Teen Game Nights. Board games purchased with this donation will have a sticker on them acknowledging the donation. The Leos hold their twice monthly meetings at the library; if you have a teen who might be interested in participating with this group, call the library and we will put you in touch. We love partnering with this young, community-minded group.

Due to our abundance of jigsaw puzzles we will now put them on the shelves according to the season. Right now, you can come in and see beautiful spring-themed puzzles in the magazine section.

We have filed our e-resource brochures in a hardy, functional rack by the entryway doors. If you want any information on e-books, Hoopla, Libby, or any other e-resource available through our library system, please feel free to take one.

June 1 may seem like a long way off, but we are already gearing up for our annual Diamond Valley Discovery Day Book Sale. If you have gently used books to donate, please bring them into the library anytime throughout April and May so that we can sort them into appropriate categories. Please, no encyclopedias, textbooks, manuals, or recipe books (the ones with the pages stuck together with ingredients). Please refrain from leaving them in the drop box. All items will be for sale by donation.
