Alberta Transportation Decision regarding Highway 22 near 272 ST W: I am sharing this response regarding our concerns expressed in 2018. Alberta Transportation will take the following action, after consideration of a request by residents and the County to remove passing on Highway 22 near 272 ST W in Foothills County: 1.) AT will undertake brushing of the ditches south of Highway 22 inside the curves in this area, in an effort to improve sightlines and provide better visibility. 2.) AT will remove the eastbound passing at this location (paint a solid line), which is currently approximately 150 m in length. Locations where passing is permitted have been evaluated and meet AT’s guidelines of 100m. However, removal of eastbound passing would reduce the possibility of eastbound and westbound passing interaction at this juncture. The 375m of westbound passing would remain in place. After evaluation of Highway 22, there is a concern to further restrict passing, as there are not many locations where passing is permitted on this east-west portion of Highway 22. (Just a reminder that in almost all instances, the reason for accidents/near-misses here and along this east-west stretch of Highway 22 is due to driver behaviours and impatience.)
Highway 22X – SW Calgary Ring Road Changes-Detours: Ian McColl, Public Relations Manager for KGL, shared the following news with us about the upcoming traffic realignments along Highway 22X. There are key detours that will be of interest to Foothills County residents, including: 3001.3 detour, planned for early September 2019. Throughout the project, construction info can be found at: www.swcrrproject.com. KGL is currently in discussions with Alberta Transportation regarding the timing and length of a closure on 37 Street in the median of Highway 22X. At this time, the closure could last several weeks to complete the permanent drainage and road in this area. This will affect drivers heading north on 37 Street that would like to travel west. They will first have to head eastbound to Tournament Lane, where they can turn around. Similarly, during this closure, any drivers on southbound 37 Street will have to first head westbound, then turn around at 53 Street to travel eastbound. The second stage of the detour will extend the path of westbound traffic in the median of Highway 22X all the way to 69 Street. The opening of this detour will result in the new intersection configuration at 37 Street. This is due to the realignment of westbound traffic into the current median of Highway 22X, which also removes a safe traffic queuing distance. Drivers heading northbound on 37 Street will still have to head to Tournament Lane to access westbound Highway 22X. However, drivers travelling southbound on 37 Street will have access to eastbound and westbound Highway 22X. As you can see on the MAP included, the current westbound 22X (top lanes on the diagram) is what will be under construction next as per Detour 3001.3. Traffic will remain in this configuration until 2020. Safe travels everyone!
Our local High Country Rural Crime Watch is working with RCMP, Foothills County, Alberta UCP Government, neighbouring Rural Crime Watches and our Provincial RCW: Foothills County continues their enhanced policing, hiring RCMP officers to help create a greater presence throughout Foothills and especially target hot topic areas. Foothills Patrol works to bring effective support to enforce our bylaws and traffic- related concerns. The HCRCWA Board is pleased to have met with Highwood MLA RJ Sigurdson, who is MLA for part of this RCW’s jurisdiction, to discuss our Rural Crime Watch perspective to add to the investigations being done by the Justice Ministry to address Rural Crime. Our Banff-Kananaskis MLA Miranda Rosin is also following this closely. Public town halls will be held soon. Additionally, HCRCWA shares information with other crime watch groups through Facebook and fan- outs to move information quickly to members. For more info, please visit: hcrcwa.ca
