Holes

There are holes in the sky
Where the rain gets in
But they’re ever so small
That’s why rain is thin.

By Spike Milligan

I breathe in the earthiness of rain falling and pop open my colourful umbrella. I love the green, growing goodness that rain brings. Are there really holes in the sky? Well, no, but up above is one huge hole, covered up by clouds on a rainy day.

I like to have holes in my day, too, holes in time to let some goodness in. On a day when I hurry from one thing to the next, I need a break. When my mind is cluttered with anxiety and I feel dry, shriveled up and miserable I need to break that cycle.

That’s when I need a hole to let some good, refreshing rain in. It is like opening a door for God’s spirit to come and water my soul.

Often I literally open the door, take in some deep breaths of fresh air and gaze up into the great, big hole up there, the sky.

Or, I let that inevitable bathroom break create a hole in my daily routine. I take a few extra moments to enjoy the scent of my lemongrass liquid cleanser, the feel of warm water and the bubbles burst-ing as they swirl down the drain.

Holes in my day create space for God to nourish my soul with His goodness and my grumbles morph into gratitude. My tasks run more smoothly, I handle crises better and I get along better with those around me.

God makes lots of holes. He leaves empty places. He makes things like moons, stars, planets, dirt, raindrops, trembling aspen leaves, soft plushy chinchillas, aromatic ginger and bipeds like you and me. But, He leaves lots of space in between everything He makes. Out in space, the big things, ce-lestial bodies, take up very little room in our expansive universe. Space ships seem to have no trouble maneuvering between the planets. And in each microscopic atom the protons, neutrons and electrons take up very little room. Atoms are mostly empty space. Every atom in my coffee table, my cat’s whiskers or my upper eyelid is 99.9% empty.

If God thinks that holes are so important in the material world, maybe I should make sure there is some space in my day.

I can’t always wait for a vacation in a tropical country to make space in my life, but I can make holes in my day for cool, refreshing rain from God’s Spirit to fall on me.
