Laura Kendall — Division 3
The FireSmart event at Square Butte Hall was a great success. Topics covered included the increase in timber since the 1910 fire and fire suppression policies on our landscape. Firesmart principles were covered to help residents understand how they can mitigate some of the risks. A local entrepreneur shared common problems encountered with trees becoming a hindrance for emergency and other crews in accessing properties. Alberta Forestry was on hand with a display and several firefighters as well. Information was also introduced on the Alberta governments Community Hazards Fuel Reduction Program and on Be Prepared: Wildfire Emergency Preparedness. Representatives from Caledonian Midstream, Quirk Creek Plant updated residents on current changes to their operations. We were treated to a great BBQ lunch cooked by local firefighters. And the kids were treated to a rare public appearance by Ember the Fox.
