This review is not for a single book, but a series, Things Our Fathers Saw by Matthew Rozell. This series is a must for any WWII enthusiast; all the stories are from interviews with those who lived them during the war. Rozell, a Social Studies teacher and enthusiast, had his students assist with the interviews to collect information from the veterans. The concept alone makes the series worth reading.

The stories are not explicit or graphic, but true to heart what the individual was experiencing at that point during the war, not knowing if they were ever coming home. They cover all theaters of WWII: from the day of enlistment, through training, then war, and then home. Sadly, with the end of each chapter is a statement of the date the interviewee passed away. This pulls you deeper into understanding the need for a series like this, the Vets from the greatest generation will all soon be gone. Who will tell their stories? There is a quote in the book, “Dying for freedom isn’t the worst that could happen. Being forgotten is.”.
We cannot ever let them be forgotten.
