Longview Library – Aug 2024

On June 19, library patrons were treated to an inspiring talk on the facts and myths surrounding dementia. It was given by Jennifer Mallow who has a degree in Kinesiology and is owner of Brain Health Catalyst. Jennifer led the effort to name Okotoks the first dementia friendly community in all of Alberta. She was joined that afternoon by Marianne Dickson, the Executive Director of Wild Rose Community Connections, who told us of the various help groups in our area. A lovely light lunch was provided and it was a very special afternoon. Should there be an interest, more programs like these will be offered in the future.

There are 150 colouring books with drawings of the Western Way of life by Bert Shepherd on sale at the library . Bert was a long time resident of Longview and a noted Western artist. He spent a good deal of his time teaching the children of Longview the basics of drawing. His work was honoured by having a park in the village named after him, along with that of Lorne Fuller’s. They are priced at $10.00 each and are both classics and keepsakes.

The summer reading program is in full swing. It is called Everybody’s Reading. Children adopt a soft furry animal to call their own. They must read to their adopted buddies over the summer months, checking in with Linda, our librarian, every so often.

Watch for our annual Used Book Sale during Longview Days, July 15 and 16. You are sure to find some goodies.
