Leighton Art Centre – Jul 2024

Leighton Art Centre is pleased to announce the launch of three new exhibitions.

The foothills art centre is debuting three new exhibitions including a series of outdoor art installations.

Eileen Murray: A Gaze Between Four Walls
A Gaze Between Four Walls spans more than a decade of Eileen Murray’s artistic practice and offers a chance to reflect on artistic progression and repetition. Her recent paintings and collages, steeped in the vanitas tradition, offer a contemporary take on the still-life genre, filled with symbols of beauty, pleasure, fragility, and the transience of life. The exhibition explores multiple readings of home, while evoking the quotidian, the nostalgic, and the ritual aspects of domestic space.

Aldo Marchese: The Power of Colours
The ceramic sculptures in The Power of Colours are vibrant explorations of colour and geometric form. Each sculpture is a testament to the powerful influence of colour, an element that profoundly affects our moods, thoughts, and spiritual energy. The exhibition delves into the emotional resonance of primary colours. This exhibition is a canvas furnished by nature and embroidered by imagination. Through a combination of creativity, intuition, confidence, and fearlessness, these sculptures manifest a passion for living.

Troy Nickle: Lungs of the Earth
In Lungs of the Earth, Troy Nickle considers trees as integral extensions of our bodies, functioning like lungs by converting carbon dioxide into oxygen and sustaining our breath. Over the years, Nickle’s art has been shaped by a profound relationship with trees, resulting in various site-specific installations and ephemeral works both in natural landscapes and galleries. Through his work, Nickle investigates how trees sustain life, the organisms and phenomena linked to them, and the symbolic meanings we attach to their diverse forms, imbuing them with new significance.

The outdoor installation components of Lungs of the Earth opened in June; the gallery exhibition will launch in August 2024.

A Gaze Between Four Walls, The Power of Colours, and Lungs of the Earth are presented by Leighton Art Centre with funding assistance from Government of Canada Department of Canadian Heritage, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and Calgary Arts Development.

A vibrant and open space for creativity, Leighton Art Centre (LAC) operates a heritage home, museum, galleries, outdoor trails, and an art & nature education centre on 80 acres of natural foothills grasslands, southwest of Calgary in Treaty 7 territory. Spectacular mountain views, contemporary art exhibitions, a charming gift shop featuring works by hundreds of Alberta artists, and educational programming make this a special place to experience the confluence of art and nature.
