With winter trail grooming behind us as of March 31, it’s time to give a shout out to the BCT volunteers who did their best to keep up with West Bragg Creek’s ever- changing weather “personalities”.
True to form, March had us snow farming early on to prepare for the Alberta Youth XC Ski Championships, only to deliver the best ski conditions of the season a week later thanks to a sustained heavy snowfall. Through it all, our volunteer grooming crew showed up with dedication, flexibility, and a lot of heart.
Thank you to every volunteer who helped keep the trails running this winter!
With April here, we are officially in transition season for BCT and for your trails.
While we begin winterizing grooming equipment, we’re also turning our attention to spring trail conditions. The freeze-thaw cycles of early spring can have a big impact on trail surfaces, so timing, terrain aspect, and mode of travel are especially important when planning your outing. This is the time of year when trails are most vulnerable to damage.
Responsible trail use can make a big difference;
- Ride or travel early while the ground is still frozen
- Later in the day, stick to dry, South facing trails
- If you are leaving deep ruts, it’s a sign the trail is too soft
Ruts prevent trails from drying properly by trapping water and impeding drainage.
With 170 km of trails to care for, BCT is often stretched to reach every trouble spot quickly. We ask everyone in the trail community to do their part to help protect the trails we all enjoy.
Better yet, consider giving back. Volunteer opportunities abound for those who want to support the epic riding and recreation that West Bragg Creek provides.

Employment Opportunities at BCT
