Sheep River Library – Jun 2026

If you haven’t seen Doris at the front desk lately, it is because she has been buried in the back room sorting out the book donations for our book sale on Saturday, June 6. As best we can, books are categorised according to subject or genre so you can more easily find what you are looking for.

We have thousands of items just wanting to find a new home. The sale runs from 11 am–4 pm on our front entrance veranda. So come on over after the parade and see what treasures you can find. All items are for sale by cash only donation.

Registration is now open for our Summer Camps, and all information regarding camps is on our website. The Dragon Adventure Camp (July 6–10) gives kids a chance to be immersed in the world of Dungeons and Dragons; learn storytelling, character creation and game mechanics. Kananaskis Kids’ Choir camp returns for the third summer, July 13–17. This camp includes music education, fun games and songs. It winds up with a concert showcasing all the amazing talent.

Camp Wildcraft (July 20–24) offers a fun-filled week of outdoor experience, hands-on experience and imaginative play. Campers will create using natural and recycled materials. STEAM camp returns July 27–31. Technology used at this camp includes Scratch, MakeyMakey, Lego Spike, Sphero Minis, Virtual Reality and Snap Circuits. In August we have three art camps run by Trish Draper of Art Adventures: Creature Collector Camp (August 4–7), Wizarding Worlds (August 10–14) and Tiny World Architects (August 17–21). Spots are filling up fast so come into the library to secure your child’s place.

There is one more drumming circle before the summer break. We are thrilled that Judy Lawton, a certified drumming circle facilitator has agreed to take over running the group. The circle meets on Friday, June 12 at 7 pm. Drop-ins are welcome, but registration is encouraged.

If you need tools to get that project completed around the house, don’t forget our tool library which is made up of small tools such as a drill, sander, hand saw and many smaller items such as screwdrivers, hammers and pliers. Do you want to know what the chemical make-up and nutrient levels of your soil to make the best choice when it comes to planting? We have a soil tester for those of you who want to get going on that garden. The tool library is located right on front of the circulation desk. We are adding crafting tools and other cool stuff this summer. Please ask the staff for help to retrieve any item you wish to check out.

Above the tool library we have our seasonal display case. Displays are either curated by the staff, such the recent poetry book display to celebrate Poetry month in April, or our wonderful art co-ordinators, Andy and Chester Lees. Art displays feature work from local artists such as the bird display in March. Currently, we have a Star Wars themed display in honour of Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you). Until it goes, I have a stormtrooper staring right into my office. It’s hard not hear “dum, dum, da dum, da, da, dum, da, da, dum” in my head everyday.

Located next to the display cabinet are the drawers that store our AV items. We have made some changes to this collection. TV series DVDs are now housed separately from DVD/Blu Ray movies. If you are having difficulty locating the item you are looking for, please ask the staff for assistance.

The library will be closed Wednesday, July 1 for Canada Day.
