Sheep River Library – Apr 2026

Hollywood Got It Wrong got off to a great start in March. In April three more movies will be examined by professionals in their field. On April 11, publisher Margaret Curelas looks at Miss Potter. African Studies professor, Motilola Akinfemisoye-Adejare will take on Black Panther on April 18. The series ends on April 25 with Chemistry professor Amanda Musgrove discussing Elemental. All expert talks begin at 3:00 pm and movie times vary depending on the length of the movie, but they are all listed on our website.

On Saturday, April 18 we have Bertrand Beckersteth speaking at 10:30 am. Bertrand is a poet, playwright, essayist, and educator. He was the Athabasca University Writer in Residence for 2024-2025. His poetry collection, The Response of Weeds, was the winner of several awards. His forthcoming collection, Canadian Colored, will be published by NeWest Press in 2027. Numinous Animal: Tracing the Afrofuturism of Black Cowboys will be published by Athabasca University Press in the fall of 2026. His current project features poetry about Black cowboys from Alberta. In his talk Bertrand will share some discoveries he has made of cattle brands registered by Black cowboys in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as some details of their lives. These cowboys and the poetic language of their brands has served as an inspiration for his most recent poetry manuscript. Bertrand will read a very brief selection and discuss how he forged a very powerful and very unexpected collaboration with these cowboys from long ago. If you are planning to attend both the poetry session in the morning and the Black Panther movie and talk in the afternoon, we invite you to stay for lunch in between. There is no charge for the lunch but you must register online by clicking on the link in this month’s newsletter at www.sheepriverlibrary.ca/news.
