MAKE YOUR MARK – Mark Kamachi – Apr 2026

I’mmmm baaaack!

Not that I ever left. But some folks took my last article as a “sign-off ”. Not so. But now that I’ve officially entered the chronological age of “retirement”, that doesn’t mean it’s time to be put to pasture. At this point in my career and life, I’ve never felt more mentally and physically stimulated to push my boundaries to see how the next few decades take shape. And having reached this milestone feeling decades younger, I feel it’s time to add another chapter to my “Book of Knowledge” as I’m planning on many more decades prancing about on this planet.

While some consider retirement as a time to take a long vacation, I’d like to think I’ve lived to now as if I’ve always been on vacation. Whether I’m creating ads, playing in a band, mentoring young minds, acting in front of an audience, or soliciting “When I was your age blah, blah, blah” advice to anyone who would listen, I’m always seeking ways to better myself and others who will listen.

I’ve never felt more confident in advising folks on their branding. Afterall, I have 40+ years of hands-on, award-winning proof in the advertising-design profession. If you’re a geezer like me, you should also be proudly shouting from bridge decks that you have information and stories of life experiences to share. This brings me to my next occupation on my to-do list before I’m “dust in the wind”.

In my life, I’ve had the privilege to be a blueberry picker, deckhand, encyclopedia salesman, janitor, community centre sports manager, lifeguard, graphic designer, clothing designer, creative director, ski instructor, inventor, husband/father, teacher/professor, musician, politician, actor, and now at 65… wait for it.

Each of these “learnings” has led me to where I am today. They are all interconnected. All pages of history in my memoir. And my next chapter is no different. I’m about to add a new drop-down menu item to my list of accomplishments, taking advantage of what my life’s “vacation” has taught me. It has taken years of research, commitment, sweat and dollars to be able to seriously give this a shot. And to reflect this new direction, I’m creating a new sub-brand for myself and creating a package to go with it. A lot of “networking” via social media, advertising and shaking hands is also required if this new direction is going to succeed. But I’m not scared. I’m really, really excited.

I know I will face some teasing, ridicule, support and congratulations. It’s a calculated gamble but I have nothing to lose. I will take that first step. I’ve been tripped many times in life but have never fallen so hard I couldn’t get up (it just may take a few extra seconds and a couple of grunts).

As of this writing, I have completed training for my new goal and I’m about to buckle up and study for my exams (written and practical) which I hope to pass before my next article. Once this step is completed, I will bring you in on my new secret “talent” as a…

So, to all of my loyal High Country News followers (thank you both). If you see yourself in the same boat, wondering what to do next in life, lets chat over some caffeine. Whether you’re fresh out of school or fresh out of a career, continuing to move forward is essential to a life full of purpose. Perhaps I can help.

Stay healthy. Cheers, mark.
