HELLO DIAMOND VALLEY – Apr 2026

Hello, Diamond Valley. Well, if you’re like most people, we are just waiting for Spring to come. We sure had a lot of snow in March, some days with multiple shovelling needed. The first official day of Spring was March 20, so the countdown to Summer begins!

To help you get in the mood, there will be a Spring Tonic on April 18 at 7:30, which is just what the doctor ordered. Doc Mehl and Doris Daley will entertain you with original music and western poetry. These two are quite famous around Alberta and the Foothills. The show will be held at the Turner Valley United Church located at 125 Royal Avenue, for tickets, stop by the Church or they are also available at Blue Rock Gallery or Sheep River Library.

The Diamond Valley Singers invite all to their Upcoming Spring Concert. Join them for a lively afternoon of music featuring popular favorites, classics, and Canadian folk songs performed by their community choir, which was founded in 2014. Admission is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Light refreshments will follow the concert. Bring a friend and welcome Spring with a song! The concert will be held at the Sheep River Library on April 12 at 2pm.

The third annual Dinner for a Dog Gala is coming up very soon. Held by the Veteran’s Service Dog Society of Alberta, this important event raises funds to supply a service dog to a military veteran. The event will be held in Okotoks at the Viking Rental Centre, with dinner, a silent and live auction, and DJ. Tickets info is VSDSofAlberta.com. If it’s sold out by the time of printing, please consider a donation anyways as this is such an important organization. Together, we can turn courage into comfort.

Beneath the Arch Concert series presents Scott Nolan, an amazing storyteller and a man of many instruments on April 25 at the Flare and Derrick. The Arch’s annual bursary is also available to apply in April. This bursary enables young performing artists to enhance their experiences and skills. It is available to grades 4-12 students who reside in or attend school in the Foothills. For full details, or to get tickets for the Nolan show, please visit beneaththearch.ca.

And for the classical music lover, Trio Fibonacci is performing at the High River United Church on April 10. As part of the Gift of Music Concert Series, this trio of violin, cello, and piano will captivate their audience with vibrant and engaging pieces. For tickets and info, you can go to highrivergiftofmusic.com.

Foothills Country Hospice’s annual Hike for Hospice is scheduled for May 3. This important fundraiser is for walks/runs around Sheep River pathways in Okotoks. You can sign up for a 2 or 5K walk or a 5 or 10K timed hustle run. Proceeds go towards the Hospice. To find out more or to register, please visit countryhospice.org.

Gardening season is here! Both Black Diamond and Turner Valley have community gardens, in which you can rent a plot if you don’t have space where you live. Most gardening tools are available as are workshops and special events. BD’s location is 2 Ave. and 1 St. NE, and TV’s location is 625 Calkins Place if you want to check them out. To find out more or to get your own plot, please visit their Facebook page.

For the rest of the Foothills, there are a variey of Gardening Clubs available depending on where you live. The Millarville Horticultural Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Anglican Christ Church on Highway 549 at 7pm. And the Foothills Horticultural Club meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 9:30am, please check out their websites for more details. These clubs offer garden tours, workshops, and some have discounts to local gardening centres. Happy gardening!

The Foothills 1st Scouts are holding their bottle drive on Saturday, April 18. They will be going door to door but you can leave your bags of empty bottles and cans by your front sidewalk, with “Scouts” labelled on them. The bottle drive will be held from 9am-1pm. Proceeds go to the troop and help them with summer camps and activities.

If you have any events or news for the month of May, please drop me a line at elaine.w@telus.net. The deadline for this issue is April 15.

Happy Spring and Easter everyone!
