BREAKING THE JOURNEY

My toes stretch and wiggle in anticipation! We are going to stay the night at one of the cabins at Barefoot Villas tonight. It’s clean and cozy, tiny and tidy and the bed is soft and spacious. We can conveniently cook our own supper in the well equipped kitchen, curl up and relax with a good book, and take a stroll along the lakeshore to watch the sunset before going to bed.

Tomorrow we will drive many miles, fight the traffic in Vancouver and stay in a cheap high rise hotel with city lights, the hum of constant traffic and the roar of jet planes.

Our one-night stay at Barefoot Villas is an oasis on our journey; a Sabbath along the way.

But not every day is filled with excited anticipation. Other days occur more often. Days that are another kind of journey, filled with tasks and expectations. On those days I need to be intentional. I need to take a break. I need to take a Sabbath along the way.

So, I breathe deeply, look up and find three things I am grateful for. It’s not difficult. I am glad for warm shower water coursing down my body, the tasty tang of strawberries on my breakfast cereal, a job completed, the scent of my lemongrass soap in the bathroom, the caressing fur of my cat as he rubs against my leg, enough money to pay the bills.

Oh! That’s more than three! Never mind!

When I am working through my day, my mind gets tired and my body fatigued. I need to take a break. I stretch and flex; it’s a mini-Sabbath along the way. My soul gets thirsty and my emotions get frazzled. I stop and remember what my heavenly Father says: ‘Be still, and know that I am God!’ Another break in the day’s journey!

As the day continues and the days keep succeeding one another, as automatic as breathing, the pauses occur. More is accomplished. Life is more settled. Peace reigns more often.
