BCT Trail Centre Engagement Surveys – What We Heard

Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in the recent permanent Trail Centre engagement surveys. We received input from 41 trails user groups representing over 35,000 members, and another 1,100 responses from individual members of the BCT community. In aggregate, these provide valuable insight into how the trails are used and what matters most to those who spend time there.

The surveys were designed to better understand trail use patterns, the types of amenities that may support the experience, and community perspectives on the potential development of a permanent Trail Centre. As expected, the feedback reflects a wide range of perspectives from a highly engaged trail community.

Responses show that cross-country skiing and hiking are among the most common activities at WBC, with many groups and participants identifying as regular users, volunteers, and donors of the trail network. Interest in a permanent Trail Centre is very strong among User Groups, and more mixed for individuals. A significant number of respondents indicating they are supportive, alongside others that with more cautious viewpoints. Many respondents noted that a permanent Trail Centre could enhance the overall experience, while not necessarily increasing visitation.

Through both survey responses and written comments, several consistent themes emerged. Many participants expressed support for improvements, particularly related to washroom facilities, running water, and accessibility. User Groups also expressed a strong desire for meeting space. At the same time, many emphasized the importance of maintaining the natural, simple character of West Bragg Creek and some shared concerns about additional development or potential impacts on the experience.

Our community shared a wide range of perspectives. While many see benefit in a permanent Trail Centre, others expressed concerns or questioned the need. This feedback is important and will help inform thoughtful, balanced decision-making as the project continues to be explored.

It is important to note that the surveys represents input from those who chose to participate and is intended to help inform planning, rather than act as a vote for or against a specific outcome. The insights gathered provide meaningful context to support ongoing discussions about stewardship, sustainability, and the long- term future of the WBC trail network.

As we move forward, BCT remains committed to transparency and continued engagement. We will continue to share updates, reflect on what we have heard, and ensure that any future planning aligns with the values of the community and the responsible use of this shared landscape.

Thank you again for your time, your input, and for being part of the BCT community.
