COUNCILLOR UPDATE – Suzanne Oel – Foothills County – Oct 2024

Suzanne Oel – Division 4

Greetings! Sharing my News Update…

Priddis Area Cyclists & Parking Issues: Due to the ongoing attraction of many visitors to the Priddis area, Foothills County and the Priddis Community Association have organized a Community Meeting to take place on October 22, 2024, 7:00 pm at the Priddis Community Hall. You are invited to join us to discuss Cyclists impacts and Parking issues, history of these topics, engage in Q&A, and propose solutions. We have also invited Foothills County Councillors, Foothills County Recreation and Enforcement Staff, RCMP, and PCA representatives. Refreshments to be served. Please see our poster graphic printed on this page. Thank you to the High Country News for printing this!

Priddis Bridge Update: With recent accidents near the Priddis bridge on Highway 22, I received a few inquiries about the status of the bridge plans. The project remains on the 2024 Provincial Construction Program, where this project is listed at the “design” stage, including a bridge replacement and an intersection improvement. The Fish Creek Bridge on Hwy. 22, 1 km N of Priddis (2047-1), is slated for a bridge replacement to support over-sized/over-weight corridor movement and enhance public safety. The safety and roadway improvement between E of Fish Creek to W of Fish Creek (road re-profile, climbing lanes, intersection improvement and overlay) is planned to support over-sized/over-weight corridor movement and enhance public safety. There appears to be room for left hand turns, north and south off Highway 22, and a lane beside in each direction (east and west). With so much pressure at this intersection, this will be a welcome improvement. Looking forward to the build!

Dark Sky “Friendly” FortisAlberta Options: FortisAlberta looks after the distribution of electricity to about 60% of Alberta customers, looks after the wires, connects users to the grid and provides yard/streetlight services. Over time they have improved their options for more Dark Sky friendly exterior yard lights and streetlights. While customers can still select the more glaring-obtrusive light fixtures, FortisAlberta now offers some better options, such as: the standard Cobra (cutoff & 3,000k), the Galleon (cutoff & 3,000k), the Domus (cutoff & 3,000k) and a standard Yard Light (cut off, although it is still 4,000k, not the best). he cut off fixtures with more yellow light (3,000k or less)work better to protect the night sky for numerous reasons, which you can read about on our website: darkskycountry.ca/

Dark Sky “Friendly” Yard Lights: If you have an old-style, light-up-the-universe type of yard light, did you know that you can ask FortisAlberta to retrofit your existing yard light or change the head to reduce the glare and inefficient use of light and energy? If you want them to investigate changing your yard light, you must first confirm that you have a FortisAlberta-owned light. The company will take a request from you, the customer, to alter your existing light fixture by installing a “shield” on the fixture. You, the customer, can call in to make a request for an assessment of the light and ask for the shield install or a new light fixture or to shut it off. Get a quote. Municipalities and businesses can also retrofit or ask for new fixtures when they need replacement or when they choose to add/alter exterior streetlights. You can contact FortisAlberta at 310.9473. Check out these links and view their lighting catalogue.
