Happy New Year to all the trail enthusiasts who support the efforts of the volunteers and staff of BCT. So far the predictions of an El Nino year have borne true. It has been a challenge for our grooming team, desperate to make something out of the lack of snow and warm temperatures.
We welcomed many new faces to the grooming teams this year so being potentially sidelined is disappointing for them.
We want to thank everyone who supported our 4th Annual Online Auction this year. BCT now has $17,100 more to put directly towards trails. It really does take a community to create something great!
BCT’s position on logging impacts of West Bragg Creek Trails
We have been receiving regular inquiries from concerned trail users asking us what our position is on the logging planned adjacent to the trails based out of the Fullerton Loop parking lot. Some of the trails managed by the Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society on Moose Mountain are also impacted by West Fraser Timber’s (WFT) plans to log in the area in 2026.
This area of Kananaskis Country is categorized as Public Land Use Zone and is managed as multi-use. This means that recreational trails and permitted industrial activities such as logging and grazing are deemed to have value on this shared landscape. The current process requires impacted parties to collaborate in order to find solutions to the conflict. This is where we find ourselves right now.
BCT is actively advocating for trails, having met with WFT twice already to start finding solutions. We have agreed to begin on-site visits beginning in the Spring of 2024 to evaluate each impacted trail individually.
See you on the trails
Conrad Schiebel (BCT President)
