BCT Transfers Community Trail Maintenance to Rocky View County
After more than two decades of planning, designing, developing, building and maintaining the 12 km of Bragg Creek community trails in Rocky View County (RVC), Bragg Creek Trails (BCT) was given the option to transfer trail maintenance to the County’s operations team during recent contract discussions. It was determined that having RVC become the primary trail operator would provide a more efficient use of both financial and human resources, while allowing BCT to focus on maintaining the 166 km of trails in West Bragg Creek within Kananaskis Country.

BCT’s origin story included early advocacy to ensure that trails and pathways designed for non-motorized transportation were incorporated into the Greater Bragg Creek Area Structure Plan (ASP). Connectivity within the Greater Bragg Creek area, as well as with the surrounding communities, was a vision shared by many “Creekers” and visitors alike. The ASP, approved in early 2007, became the foundation for the five trails that now serve the community:
- Banded Peak Trail from the Community Centre to the Banded Peak school
- Banded Peak Connector from the school to Alder Trail in Bragg Creek Provincial Park
- Centennial Trail along White Avenue to Bragg Creek Provincial Park
- West Bragg Creek Trans Canada Trail (TCT) to Kananaskis Country
- Trail Connector from the Hamlet into Redwood Meadows
These trails were successfully built through the efforts of many strategic partners, including RVC. To date BCT has raised $4.02 M to build this important infrastructure, with the 7 km section of the Trans Canada Trail standing as BCT’s crowning achievement.
