Sheep River Library – Jul 2024

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our annual book sale on June 1. It was a roaring success with many people walking away with treasured finds in exchange for much appreciated funds for the library. All our leftovers will be going to a good home at Better World Books. Thank you to all the volunteers, including the Leos group, who helped with the set up and tear down.

The Marigold Library System workshop was held in mid-May, and we are thrilled to report that we received a Making A Difference award for our podcast room. It is very gratifying to be acknowledged for our innovation in this area. If you are interested in making a podcast, please call Teagan to arrange for a session. If you would like to listen to any of the podcasts Teagan has created, they are available on our website.

Summer camps will be starting in a couple of weeks, so don’t waste any time registering your child: Kananaskis Kids’ Choir Camp ( July 15-19); Kym’s Super Fun Time Art ( July 22-26) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), ( July 29-Aug 2). For more information or to register, go to sheepriverlibrary.ca or call 403-933-3278.

Our Summer Reading Program takes place at the fireplace this year on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:00 am, starting July 10. Come for 30 minutes of story time with Teagan and some other fabulous guest story tellers. A take home craft will be provided each week. Register at the library.

Family Movie Nights start again on Thursday July 11 at 6:00 pm. Each week a family friendly movie will be screened. Titles will be advertised on our Facebook page and website. No registration is required, and you are welcome to bring snacks.

Our bright and shiny new telescope is now ready to be taken out in its new padded, easy to transport carrier. So, no more lugging a cumbersome plastic bin around! Patrons with a Sheep River Library membership can borrow the telescope for 7 days. Fortunately for us, according to the experts our summer night sky is more interesting than our winter skies. If you are willing to stay up until it gets dark, you will be in for a treat. We have many astronomy books in our collection, along with some Great Courses DVDs on the subject.

Are you or a family member heading off to a post-secondary institution this fall? Do you want to know about what that school’s library will be able to do for you? Or do you want to get advanced knowledge about makerspaces, bookable study rooms, or how to contact a librarian who knows all about finding all the books, magazines, journals articles, and high-quality online information for your assignments? If you are worried or intimidated by any of these things, you are not alone. This is such a common feeling that librarians have done in depth research into what we call “library anxiety.” Our staff member Cheryl, who has expertise in this field, is happy to help you take the first steps in learning about what your university, college, or other post-secondary library offers.

Fill out the form on our website (link posted on sheepriverlibrary.ca/News) to be notified of workshops showing you the basics of your post-secondary library.

The workshops will cover one or more libraries, depending on how many people attending each institution sign up. If you know friends going to the same place as you, encourage them to sign up, too! We plan to run these workshop(s) in mid- to late-August.

Happy Summer!
(Should it ever stop raining).
