Discover a season of learning and fun with our exciting lineup of winter/spring 2026 programs. A full listing is in the program pages in this issue and on our website. If you have ever wanted to take a self defence class, but don’t want to go all the way to Calgary, we have the classes coming to you! A combination of lecture and hands-on practice will focus on situational awareness and practical tactics that can help you to stay safe. Classes are open to everyone, 13 years and over for the low cost of $25. There are three two-class sessions. All classes run from 2:00- 4:00 pm. Saturdays, January 17 and 24 are for those with mobility issues and/or seniors; Sundays January 18 & 25, or February 1 & 8 for those 13+ with no mobility issues. Registration is required.

Another new class this winter is Fabric Ice Dyeing which is a fun way to make the most of the snow that insists on falling upon us. We have some old favourites returning such as Making Sourdough Bread, Painting Your Way and Ukelele Happiness. Our Emergency Preparedness series returns in May with talks on Wildfires and FireSmart, Flooding and Floodplain awareness, Communications and Evacuations, Insurance and Crime prevention.

Don’t forget to join us for our special events such as An Evening with Arctic Explorer John Dunn on Wednesday, April 1 at 7:00. John is a photographer and wilderness traveller with a passion for the Arctic and sharing his images and experiences with a wide range of audiences. John has planned and completed over 30 Arctic expeditions totalling some 1200 days in the field, including 13,500 km of sled-hauling.

Our Celebration of Black Voices takes place on Saturday, April 18, beginning with a talk from poet, playwright and educator, Bertrand Bickersteth at 10:30 am. The afternoon session is a special Hollywood Got it Wrong presentation by African Studies professor, Motilola Akinfemisoye-Adejare who will take on depictions of African culture in the movie Black Panther. A lunch will be served between the two sessions.

Along with the African Studies Professor, we have five more professors/experts from the following disciplines: history, psychology, science, a publisher, and a commercial pilot for the Hollywood Got It Wrong sessions in March and April. More details regarding the movies they will take on and their bios are on our website. Dates and times (eventually) can be found there as well as in the program pages in this issue of the High Country News.

We are thrilled to be hosting the Vested Interests Climate Change Fashion Show on Sunday, February 22 at 2:00. Join us for a fun, entertaining, informative and a little bit quirky fashion show of garments with original graphics telling stories of climate change.

Miserable Millennials starts the year with a Pizza Party on Friday, January 30 at 6:30. If you are roughly 29-42, you are welcome to come along. You are encouraged to pre-order pizza choices online. Minimum recommended donation is $3 per slice.

A quick glance through the program pages shows that we have a lot on offer for children. Important events to note are the Lego competition (February 7), Science Fair (March 7) and Reading Dragons game nights (last Wednesdays). The Future Minds Science Club is a new program taking place on the third Saturday of each month starting January 17. Each session will explore new themes in science, technology, engineering, art and math.
