The Sheep River Library is rolling out a fresh slate of programs this fall, aiming to foster learning, creativity, and community engagement for residents of all ages.
A full list of our programs is available in the centre pages of this issue of the High Country News, on our website, and in brochure format at the library. Sign up soon for any that interest you!
For children, we are excited to announce Reading Dragons is coming to the library! This is a fun reading incentive program using collectible cards to collect, trade, and play games with. For every 30 minutes of reading, check off a box on your reading tracker. When you’ve read for 2 hours, come in to collect a dragon family. Game nights take place the last Wednesday of the month at 4:15 pm.
On November 22, we have the portable Astrodome Planetarium coming to the library. Children and teens are welcome to come for a fun and informative session with an astronomer. There will be several sessions throughout the day for different age groups including one for adults and older teens in the evening. Details and specific times will be on our website in the fall.
On Saturday, October 25, in conjunction with Millarville Library we are hosting the first Annual Western Foothills Pumpkin Derby. Choose a pumpkin, put some wheels on it, decorate it and bring it down to the Sheep River Library parking lot to race it against other entries. Prizes will be awarded for fastest, best decorated, scariest and most smashed. Contest rules can be found on our website in September. If you don’t want to enter you can bring your family to witness the pumpkin carnage.
We are thrilled to be hosting the first annual Science fair in March of 2026. Registration opens in September, and all fair rules and regulations will be posted on our website.
Adults can participate in a range of wellness and enrichment offerings, including Ukelele Happiness Fix, Sound Bath, and Drumming Circle. We are providing a few safety related sessions including online safety and fraud, online misinformation, and home fire and safety planning. For those interested in home energy matters we are partnering with Foothills Energy Co-op for two sessions: Solar Power and Understanding Utility Bills.
Get ready to celebrate creativity, community, and culture this September during Alberta Culture Days at the Sheep River Library. In partnership with the Sheep Creek Arts Council (SCAC), the Library will be hosting a series of vibrant and family-friendly events throughout the month. Festivities kick off on Friday, September 12 at 7:00 pm with a Drumming Circle, led by a special guest facilitator. Everyone is welcome to join in this engaging and rhythmic experience.
The cultural celebration continues on Saturday, September 20, with a SCAC Members Art Show. Local artists will be on site demonstrating their techniques and sharing their creative processes. For many of them, this will be their first public showcase — an exciting milestone! Visitors will also have the chance to learn about upcoming art classes and meet some instructors.
Bring the whole family; there will be free hands-on children’s activities throughout the day to spark imagination and creativity.
To wrap up the month, don’t miss the Free Quilt Workshop happening on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27 at Sheep Creek Arts Council. This special two-day session will explore the paperless paper piecing technique. Registration is required, so be sure to sign up early as space is limited.
Mark your calendars and join us for these inspiring events that showcase the richness of local culture and talent in Diamond Valley!
