Postal Strike Delays Threaten Support for Vulnerable Animals – Alberta SPCA – Oct 2025

Alberta SPCA urges public to help animals amid postal service disruption.

A national postal strike has halted the processing and delivery of all mail and parcels, creating challenges for the Alberta SPCA’s Animal Heroes Lottery. The strike coincides with the organization’s fundraising campaign, which runs from late September to early December. Many long-time supporters depend on receiving their order forms through the mail, but with mail service suspended, those forms remain undelivered and stuck in the postal system.

The holiday edition of the Animal Heroes Lottery is the biggest raffle the organization runs, raising more than $500,000 each year to support animal protection across Alberta. These funds fuel province-wide work enforcing animal protection laws, providing education, advocacy, and on-the- ground oversight to ensure the safety of animals across Alberta.

Lottery sales and donations during the last quarter of the year account for nearly 60 percent of the Alberta SPCA’s annual fundraising revenue. Since the organization relies on donors for nearly 80 percent of its funding, any disruption poses a significant risk to the programs and services that protect animals and support Albertans.

“The timing of this strike is challenging, as many of our lottery donors are used to receiving their Animal Heroes Lottery order forms via mail,” said Leanne Niblock, Alberta SPCA Executive Director. “While the disruption is beyond our control, what has not changed is the need to help animals across Alberta. We are encouraging everyone who can to order their tickets online or by phone so that vulnerable animals do not lose out on the support they need.”

Albertans can support the Alberta SPCA’s Animal Heroes Lottery by purchasing tickets online at AnimalHeroesLottery.ca or by phone at 1-888-802-0780.
