It’s September and time to talk about Fall programs running at the library. Although we do not have as many as we would normally have, some old favourites are returning along with some new classes. For times and dates, please got to sheepriverlibrary.ca or pick up a program brochure at the library.
For preschoolers, Elone and Janine will once again be running Toddler Rhyme Time, Songs and Rhymes for Movers and Songs and Rhymes for Babies on Wednesday mornings. The outdoor program, Children in Nature will take place on Wednesday afternoons. The Greater Foothills Family Centre will be running Kids in Motion for 3 – 6 year olds on Thursday mornings in September and the Moms Coffee and Playgroup Time has moved to Monday mornings at 10 am.
For adults, most of our monthly clubs and groups will be back at it again: Diamond Valley Book Club, Poetry by the Fireside, Community Drumming Circle and Diamond Valley Songwriters have confirmed their start dates which are on our website. Single evening classes on offer this fall are Library 101- the basics of library life and how to use the library will be hosted by resident library expert Doris Mehl. How to Solve Cryptic Crosswords will be taught by library manager Jan Burney. If you have been mystified by the crosswords on the back page of the few issues of the High Country News, then this is the class for you.
Weekly classes such as Qi Gong, Inductive Bible Study, Quilting and Sewing and Fibre Fiends will also be back at the library in September.
Please note that all of the above could change if the province mandates any changes to COVID protocols. (But we are going to hope that does not happen!)
Our Out Loud Series will run this year, but one month later in November. We have a great line up that should have something for everyone. First up on Friday, November 5 is Sherri-D Wilson. Sheri-D was the Poet Laureate of Calgary from 2018-2020. She is the award-winning author of 13 books and four albums which combine music and poetry. She received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Kwantlen University in 2017 and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2019. Known for her electric performance-style and surrealist perspective, she is a favourite of festivals around the world. Sherri-D will also be teaching a workshop From Creation to Oration the following day, November 6. Anyone interested in writing or performing poetry is welcome.
Saturday, November 13 sees Notable Exceptions arrive from south of the border (fingers crossed). The Notable Exceptions sound is a potpourri of Folk, Western, and novelty tunes. From house concerts to concert halls, Judy Coder and Jennifer Epps are known in the world of western music for their finely crafted vocal harmony. Their original tunes are lighthearted and conversational. For accompaniment, Judy’s tasteful rhythm guitar is right on the button; Jennifer sweetens the sound with tidbits of harmonica, rhythm instruments, flutes and whistles. To round out our series we have The Best of the Storytelling West Show with Bj Smith and Ol’ Ugly ( John Glawson) on Saturday, November 20. Bj Smith is a winner of the Academy of Western Artists Will Rogers Award for best cowboy poetry CD of the year. His performances have been featured at Cowboy Poetry Gatherings and Festivals across western Canada and the USA. John Glawson’s clean, hilarious stories about his older brother, Blue, his eighty-six year old, Aunt Tilley, and her boyfriend, Creaky Olson has earned Ol’ Ugly the reputation, throughout Western Canada and the Northern USA, as ‘One of Canada’s Funniest Storytellers.’
Free tickets for all Out Loud events will be available September 15. To register for any other program, either call (403-933-3278) or drop in and see us.
Happy Reading!
