HELLO DIAMOND VALLEY – Sep 2024

Hello, Diamond Valley. Well, the first official day of autumn this year is September 22. It’s been a great summer, with some spectacular lightning and thunder storms, mixed with hail and lots of smoke from forest fires. But no flooding this year, so that was good.

It’s Grandparents Day on September 8, if you are lucky enough to have your grandparents, here’s some ideas to celebrate it with them.

Our own Valley Neighbours Club has bingo on September 6, whist/wizard on September 10, and floor curling on September 9. The VNC is located in Turner Valley and they have different classes and courses to sign up for, with just a very reasonable yearly membership fee needed, as well as the class itself. Drop by on Sunset Boulevard or visit their website to find out more.

Right next door to the VNC is the Sheep Creek Arts Council, and they have a ton of great classes courses, and clubs. Some include fibre arts, painting and drawing, and handicrafts, drop by to find out more or visit their website.

The Griffiths Centre in Black Diamond offers a plethora of classes, clubs, and courses as well. They host their annual Quilt and Craft Show on September 28. The Quilt Group meets every Monday at 11:30am, so drop by to check that club out as well as the many other classes they offer, such as exercise, yoga, guitar and ukelele, writer’s group, floor curling, games, and more. The yearly membership there is only $20.

The annual High River Hot Air Balloon Festival is the weekend of September 25-29. Feel the heat, hear the blasts, and see the glow on their magical Glow Night, September 27. There will be opening ceremonies as well as other sights, for more information, visit heritageinninternationalballoonfestival.com.

Also in High River is one of my favorite events of the year, the River City Classics Show and Shine. This is the third annual Brian Chipchase Jr. Memorial Show, with a parts swap, burnout, and dance, followed by the Show and Shine on Sunday. You can also enter a raffle to win a car! To find out full details, go to rivercityclassics.ca.

The annual Terry Fox Run in Okotoks is scheduled for September 17. The Cancer Research Fundraiser will be held at Sheep River Park this year. Terry Fox was an inspiration to all with his Marathon of Hope in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research. He lost his battle with cancer but his Run is in its’ 44th year and has raised over $850 million for cancer research. To join the Run or to donate, visit terryfoxrun.org.

Beneath the Arch Concert Series is back for the season with a double header on September 21. Skinny Dyck and his Lethbridge band play original country twang. Then we have Sean Burns and Lost Country, vintage country music from Corb Lund’s bass player and his Winnipeg based band. For tickets and more info go to beneaththearch.ca.

The annual Millarville Chucks and Chariots is scheduled for September 4-8 at the Millarville Racetrack. This fun weekend includes family friendly entertainment, a Cabaret, music, beer gardens, and more. For tickets and full details, go to millarvilleracetrack.com.

If you have any events happening in October, please drop me a line at elaine.w@telus.net. The deadline for this issue is September 15.

Enjoy the start to fall!
