Well the days are getting shorter and the weather cooler. However there is lots to do around town and our beautiful Foothills to keep you busy as we transition into fall.
The Valley Neighbour’s Club is hosting a Lunch and Learn for October. The topic is “From Accumulation to Income”. This seminar is for those who are ready to shift their focus from growing wealth to generating a sustainable income into retirement. You’ll explore strategies and planning and how to manage your investments to last a lifetime. If you’re retired or retiring soon this is a good seminar to learn from and all are welcome. It will be held on October 14 at 11am, there will be coffee, tea, and a light snack and you are welcome to bring a lunch.
Also at the Valley Neighbour’s Club, which is in Turner Valley on Sunset Boulevard, there will be a Thanksgiving dinner on October 5, and a bus going to Cirque Du Soleil on October 8. For more information on these events and yearly membership, drop by or go to their website. The VNC offers many fun things to do, including game playing and exercise, dancing and floor curling, come and check them out!
Right beside the VNC is the Sheep Creek Arts Council, and they have some great fall classes you might be interested in. Some include painting, soft pastels, open drawing, learn to sew, crochet or work with felts. There is also a Saturday Art Drop In which is on the last Saturday of the month. For more details and how to become a member, drop by or visit sheepcreekarts.ca.
Also over in Turner Valley is our Sheep River Library. The fall course guide is out and is packed with classes and workshops for everyone. They offer kids programs, music, art, writing, classes, computer and legal classes, first aid courses, game nights, and so much more. This year is their first annual Western Foothills Pumpkin Derby on October 25. Put wheels on a pumpkin and see how far it will go! There will be prizes for the fastest, best decorated and more. Hosted by the Sheep River and Millarville Libraries, it will be held in the parking lot at 11:00am.
Beneath the Arch Concert Series presents the Lonesome Ace String Band on October 25. This Toronto band bridges old-time, bluegrass, and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once timeless and fresh. The show starts at 7:30 and is held at the Flare and Derrick in Turner Valley. For tickets, go to beneaththearch.ca.
Another great show is to be held at the Red Deer Lake United Church. Over the Moon features Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell, Juno nominees and nominees for the Ensemble of the Year for the Canadian Folk Music Awards. I could listen to these two all day long, their harmonizing and song choices are so good. The show will be held on October 18 at 7:30, for tickets, go to reddeerlakeuc.com/concerts.
Hartell Homestead is hosting Haunted Hartell on October 24-26. Visit their website at hartellhomestead.com. And keep an eye on the Turner Valley Legion’s Facebook page for the annual Spook House for dates and times.
It is Election Day for our towns on Monday, October 20. You can vote at the Flare and Derrick from 10-8. Advance voting is at the Griffiths Centre on October 14 and 16 from 1-7. Unofficial results will be posted on Diamond Valley Town website on Election Night, and official results will be posted on October 25. For complete details about candidates, voting, and election workers, visit DiamondValley.Town/Election.
