HELLO DIAMOND VALLEY – Jun 2024

Hello, Diamond Valley. It’s been a different spring this year, with wind and rain, snow, and sun. The first day of summer is officially June 20, let’s hope for another beautiful summer and also, that the forest fires are not out of control. It’s also Father’s Day on June 16, hope all you Dads out there have an awesome day!

You could get your Dad a ticket for the Lion’s Club Duck Derby, for a chance to win big money. First and second ducks win $1000 each, and the last ducky in wins $2000. All proceeds go to support local Youth Community Organizations. The draw date is July 1st at the Lion’s Campground in Black Diamond, for tickets, go to foothillslionsclub.ca.

The Millarville Run to the Market is on June 15, you and your Dad could do the half marathon to the Market, which opens for the season on the same day. You could Run For A Cause, for example, the Children’s Cottage Society, but there are a few versions of the Run you could do. Then enjoy a well -deserved breakfast and a walk around the Market. This Run is a fundraiser for our Millarville Racetrack Society, to register and for more details, go to millarvilleracetrack.ca.

Or if your Dad is a rodeo and car buff, the High River Rodeo is doing a Tractor Pull and Truck Show on June 16, the Guy Weadick Rodeo is held on June 21 and 22, and the annual High RIver Show and Shine on July 1. Check out highriverag.com for full details.

It’s Parade Weekend! Start Saturday, June 1 with the 56th annual Discovery Days Parade in Black Diamond, check the town’s website at diamondvalleytown.ca for the Parade Route this year as it has changed. Then head over to Turner Valley for fun in Millenium Park. Events there include food vendors, bouncy houses, inflatable games, firefighter’s challenge, petting zoo, face painting, live music, an artisan market, Oilfields High Dunk Tank, Foothills Archery Club, country line dancing, YYC Drum Circle, DJ Tim and the Sheep River Library’s Used Book Sale. The Little Leos will be holding a bake sale in front of the Library. The Diamond Valley Community Garden will host a plant sale as well, and the Turner Valley Legion’s patio, kitchen, and bar will be open and they host Mexican dancers as well. Thanks to all the volunteers who make this weekend possible, and special thanks to the Oilfields High School Leadership class volunteers who will be helping with the Millenium Park festivities.

Make sure to check our local businesses in both towns for raffles, specials, and more when out and about on Parade Day. Most activities run from 11-3, after the Parade. Also, the Dr. Lander Memorial Pool will be opening on May 30, weather permitting. It has rained on our Parade in years past, but fingers crossed the sun will be out and I hope everyone gets out and enjoys our awesome community.

July 1 is Canada Day, and the Town will give us a firework show at dusk. This year the firework will be shot from the area by the Oilfields Arena/Erma Joy Brown Park, so bring a lawnchair or blanket and celebrate Canada Day.

The kids are just about out of school for the year, happy graduation to all of you. Next issue will be what the kids can do for the summer, if you have any news for the month of July, drop me a line before June 15 at elaine.w@telus.net.

Happy Summer!
