HELLO DIAMOND VALLEY – Jan 2026

Happy New Year Diamond Valley! I hope everyone had a good holiday. Now we can look forward to a few more months of winter before spring starts its new season.

We are lucky to have so much musical talent in our Foothills. On the Edge Concert Series presents The Woodshed on January 24. This duo is made up of John Wort Hannam and T. Buckley. Their roots background and blend of harmonies makes this show memorable and enjoyable. The show will be held at the beautiful Red Deer Lake United Church at 2pm. Nice to have an afternoon show, for tickets or more info, please visit reddeerlakeuc.com/concerts.

Beneath the Arch Concert Series presents the Maria Dunn Trio on January 10. She was a campus radio DJ before releasing her own albums. This show will feature fiddler Shannon Johnson and her brother Jeremiah McDade as well as Maria of course. Check out their song “When I Was Young”, a song told through the eyes of the people of Fort McKay through to Fort McMurray. The show will be held at the Flare and Derrick at 7:30, for tickets, go to beneaththearch.ca.

The Gift of Music Concert Series presents Cameron Crozman and Meagan Milatz on January 16. This duo will perform masterworks and innovative pieces on cello and piano. The show will be held at the High RIver United Church at 7:30pm, for tickets and more info, please visit highrivergiftofmusic.com.

Back in town, our Sheep Creek Arts Council offers classes, clubs, and programs for many forms of art. The idea for a place to promote local interest in the arts formed back in 1958 and the SCAC has gone through a few changes, all through volunteers throughout the years. Classes were originally held in local schools, and the first SCAC was housed on Main Street together with the TV Skating RInk Committee. Today they reside on Sunset Boulevard next to the Valley Neighbour’s Club. Drop by or visit sheepcreekarts.ca to find out more.

The Valley Neighbour’s Club offers a ton of fun classes and programs as well such as cards, bingo, dancing, exercise, and more. Floor curling starts up again in January, as well as the annual general meeting. Please pop by to see what goes on in the VNC.

Over in Black Diamond, we have the Griffiths Centre. Membership is open to anyone 50 years or older and provides programs and activities to meet their recreational, health, and social needs. This Centre is named after Jack and Grace Griffiths who arrived from Wales in the early 1930s. They ran a boarding house and restaurant, eventually moving the building to its current location on Government Road when they retired. The building became home to the Pioneer Club to have somewhere to play cards and has developed into the organization it is today. For more info pop by or visit griffithscentre.ca.

Foster homes are in need for stray and abandoned animals. Especially during the cold weather, cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens need you to provide a safe and loving home while waiting for their furever home. Who knows, that just might be yours! Pound Rescue is a wonderful organization who provides all the supplies, medical care and support. If you can help these beautiful animals with foster care, please submit your application through poundrescue.com.

The Foothills Skating Club is open for winter registration for all ages, youth and adults, at foothills skating club.ca. Lessons are taught by certified coaches and these lessons allow many skaters to go onto higher levels of all types of ice sports such as figure skating, hockey, ringette, or speed skating. Or you could just learn to skate for fun, I never learned how. The Club began in 1960 in Black Diamond and is a not for profit. They rely on volunteers and fundraising to help keep costs low. Lessons are held at the indoor arena, come check them out!

The Oilfields Curling Club will be hosting a Ladies Bonspiel January 2-4, and you are welcome to come and cheer them on. The theme this year is Tacky Tourist” with prizes for best costume. The Curling Club is open to anyone who wants to learn this Canadian tradition, they have a pub/snacks/music space upstairs with big windows that look out onto the ice. Come check them out and find out more at occcurling.com.

If you have any events or news for February that you would like to see in the High Country News, please drop me a line before Jan. 15 at elaine.w@telus.net.

Stay warm and have fun!
