I’m not sure whether to say, “Welcome to Spring,” “Merry Christmas,” or “Happy Easter.” Spring in the foothills is always a tug of war with the longer days bringing some much-desired afternoon warmth, but cool nights reminding us of winter’s tight fist along with the spring snow – welcomed by our farmers and winter enthusiasts and despised by most other humans.
I apologize that this paper is out a week later than I had hoped. In saying that, it feels good to be able to get back to work (significantly reduced, for all those checking in on me) and participate in my small way with our community.
For those of you who don’t know, I gave my family a bit of a scare with a trip to Club Foothills (Foothills Hospital) early in the morning of March 7th. The medical team at the Foothills Hospital were truly outstanding and I am thankful for a second chance at life. The medical team reminded me often that I had a major heart attack and was very fortunate to still be on this side of earth.
It has been humbling to know how many people are standing with us as we navigate a new normal. At the same time, the recent turn of events motivates me to serve in our community, seeking its welfare as best as
I am able. A good friend (Howie Kroon) gave me some advice while in the hospital of which I would like to pass along to you.
- Fully celebrate each day, as one never knows what tomorrow will bring
- Say the things you need to say to the people you love and care for today, not tomorrow.
- In your daily pursuit of success (however that is defined within your own purpose statement) make sure you add in a little bit of significance.
- Recognize that one needs a village to thrive/ succeed, particularly when we are dealing with some adversity, including our health. As such, make sure you nourish that village with kindness, thankfulness, and a positive attitude.
It is easy to get sucked into the “what’s wrong” conversation. Although we don’t want to be naïve to issues around us, celebrating what’s right will give us a healthier perspective on life, enable and encourage those around us, and maybe put the “what’s wrong” in a better perspective, and open our eyes to a solution. I encourage you to practice the above advice and see how you can “nourish” your village.
There are several great events happening throughout April, so please try and participate and support them as best as you are able. Also, a special thanks to all the contributors that send in articles and pictures every month. It truly becomes a community paper with such great contributions.
From my family to yours,
Lowell Harder
