FRIENDS OF FOOTHILLS SCHOOL ASSOCIATION – Jul 2024

The Friends of Foothills Schools was recently formed as an independent charity dedicated to enhancing learning opportunities for students within Foothills School Division. Our goal is to work alongside donors, businesses, and school councils to provide our 8,200 students with enriched opportunities that go beyond core educational services. Our focus is in three key areas. Enhanced Learning Supports looks different for all students. This includes mental health support, technology support, and psycho-education assessments. These programs can be expensive, and some families may not have the financial means to support their child’s needs. We have an urgent need for Chrome books for our students. The current ratio of 1 Chrome book for 3 students does not provide for optimal learning in an ever-increasing technology-based world.

Empowering Flourishing Communities supports innovative projects can grow and be self-sustaining. They encourage community engagement that leads to enhanced learning opportunities for students. Oilfields High School student- led Vertical Farm initiative grows herbs and micro-greens within a converted fully sustainable 40-foot sea can that can be used year-round. Produce is sold by students at the Millarville and Okotoks Farmer’s Markets, local vendors, the school, and is moving into the ‘on-line’ world.

Our last area is Emergency Financial Needs which provides student support for school-related emergency needs such as fees for enhanced learning opportunities or other essential items that will help a student participate to the best of their ability. In High River, 13.8% of our families experience child poverty that affects approximately 200 children in our schools. In Okotoks, 8.8% poverty affects 246 children, and we know the rate for rural areas is much higher. Children often require financial support for clothing, supplies, or meals as tragedy or financial hardships make it difficult to participate fully in their educational experience.

When you donate to Friends of Foothills Schools Foundation, you are enabling Foothills students to reach the next level of their learning potential. How can you help?
