COMMUNITY CRUISERS BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO OLD BIKES – Jul 2024

Just down the road in Canmore and Banff, a nonprofit is turning heads and wheels by recycling old bicycles. Community Cruisers, established in 2007, collects unwanted bicycles, refurbishes them and sells them back into the community at affordable prices. The nonprofit and registered charity operates out of community bicycle workshops in Canmore and Banff, where a dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly to get donated bikes back on the road.

“By giving new life to old bikes, Community Cruisers promotes sustainability, provides affordable transportation, and improves health and well-being.” said board president, Jen Tweddell.

The process starts with people donating their old or unused bicycles. These bikes are then assessed, with some being refurbished and others used for parts. Skilled volunteers, ranging from professional bike mechanics to enthusiastic hobbyists, collaborate to ensure each bike is safe and functional. Once refurbished, the bicycles are sold back into the community at affordable prices.

Ken Lin came to Canmore from Taiwan in 2023 and works at Origin at Spring Creek. He bought a bike from Community Cruisers to commute to work and came back the next week to volunteer: “As I’m new to this area, it’s a great way to meet people, get to know them and learn more about fixing bikes, so I can fix my own bike without spending lots of money on it.”

In addition to selling affordable used bikes, Community Cruisers offer dedicated spaces in Canmore and Banff where community members can repair their bikes, learn, and connect. Equipped with tools, spare parts, and knowledgeable volunteers, these workshops provide access to affordable bike maintenance. Whether it’s fixing a flat tire, adjusting brakes, or learning basic maintenance skills, the workshop caters to both seasoned cyclists and beginners.

“I enjoy empowering people to work on their own bikes.” said Jeremy White, one of the volunteer mechanics, “It feels good to make bike maintenance accessible and affordable for folks in my community.”

The Canmore location at the Canmore Rec Centre is open Wednesday and Thursday evenings and the Banff location in the Fenlands is open Tuesday evenings. Both locations accept drop-ins.

Looking ahead, Community Cruisers aims to scale up its programs, increase bike donations, and extend its operating hours.

As the wheels keep turning, this community-driven organization continues to promote bicycle use for transportation as a means to improve health, sustainability, and equity in the Bow Valley.
