Business Profile: BEAVERTOOTH MULCHING – May 2024

Beaver Tooth Mulching (BTM) started rather unexpectedly, and here’s how it all began! My family and I have been living in Redwood Meadows since the early 90’s, and while we really love it there it was always a dream to own an acreage in the Bragg Creek area.

In 2015, we were fortunate enough to buy a property off Hwy 762. It is a beautiful 4-acre parcel on a hill. Initially, it was densely populated with trees, and there was a great deal of deadfall, making it difficult to walk around. It was clear the trees needed some care and attention. In 2021, I began the task of clearing the land with a chainsaw, and I very quickly realized it was going to take forever to complete the job using this method. I had to rethink my plan.

So, I bought a skid steer to move the logs and branches, and dig out the giant stumps. This helped, but then I was left with massive piles of logs, branches, and root balls. I was running out of space in the yard!

What to do? Burn it? Bury it? Haul it away? At that time, it was dry (no burn permits) and I did not have a place to bury the debris. Determined, I decided to rent a dump trailer and I hauled a lot of the debris away, but this method proved to be very inefficient. Time for another plan!

I did more research and realized it was time to get serious. I invested in a mulcher. A mulcher is an attachment for the skid steer that uses a rotary drum, equipped with carbide cutting teeth that shred trees and brush into a fine mulch without having to remove it from the property.

This 6-foot by 2-foot machine is basically a man-made eager beaver! The wood chips are spread around and mixed into the soil. This helps with the regeneration of the soil, erosion control and promotes healthy regrowth.

While completing the task on our property, I realized how much I enjoyed this work, and decided it was time to start a new career. I am thrilled to say our daughter has joined me on this venture. I have since expanded our fleet to include 2 skid steer/ mulchers, one excavator/mulcher (allows for extension for hard-to-reach areas) and multiple skid steer attachments and chainsaws for moving and processing trees.

We truly appreciate all the lovely customers we have already worked for, and look forward to meeting more local folks to see how we can assist them as well. We really do enjoy bringing your land back to life!
