In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a new brew in town! Bragg Creek’s first brewery, created by local ‘hoppertunity’ leader Jason Traviss. For decades, he dedicated himself to challenging yet rewarding work in Alberta and across Canada. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the energy industry, there was always another dream brewing in the background. That dream came to fruition in January 2024, then the products first hit shelves in May throughout Alberta.
At Cowboy Trail Brewery (CTB), the story is one of passion, perseverance, and a love for exceptional quality products. Jason wanted to create something special, a brand focused on supporting local traditions, ones that could bring people together over a shared appreciation for finely crafted spirits and beer.
Choosing Cowboy Trail as the brewery name was by design and one that honours the roots of the region. The spirit of the frontier is alive in every brew crafted. Every beer is a tribute to classic, tried, and true recipes that show in the names like Blonde, Dark, and Wheat Ale. Jason believes in simplicity, straightforward thinking, and not fixing something that isn’t broken.
The Turning Point: Meeting Bragg Creek Distillers
Jason’s journey took an exciting turn when he met the incredible team at Bragg Creek Distillers (BCD). Brett Schönekess’ (the owner of Bragg Creek Distillers) commitment to quality and craftsmanship resonated with Jason. He saw Brett as a kindred spirit and as passionate about his craft as Jason is about his. Collaborating with BCD was a natural step to create a blending of strengths that allowed them to offer an unparalleled experience to the community and beyond.
With their combined expertise, they embarked on a new adventure – one that combines the science of distilling with the art of brewing. The synergy between CTB and BCD allowed them to push their individual boundaries and create unique products. The collaboration is built on a foundation of shared values: quality, tradition, supporting local, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Cowboy Trail Brewery consistently takes pride in every step of the brewing process. From selecting the finest ingredients to meticulously crafting each batch, the commitment to quality is unwavering. A creative example of this commitment and collaboration is the process of taking the mash from the beers and using them to create a line of wholly unique stripped down moonshines. After that, the mash is often taken to a local ranch for horse feed, as well as made into homemade dog biscuits. How’s that for ingenuity?
A Shared Vision for the Future
As Jason looks down the road, he is more than thrilled about the endless possibilities that lie ahead. His journey from the energy sector to the world of brewing has been filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. He is proud to offer a range of beers that reflect his passion and commitment to quality. Each can or keg of Cowboy Trail Brewery beer is a celebration of tradition, innovation, and the joy of coming together to share a drink with friends and family. All products are available at the Bragg Creek Distillers Hut in Bragg Creek (27 Burnside Drive). You can find the products at select locations along the Cowboy Trail, on tap, and in stores. Ask your local liquor store about carrying CBT products.
