You may have already heard of my candidacy for County Councillor for the newly minted Division 1. This division of Rocky View County amalgamates the vibrant communities of Bragg Creek, Springbank, and Elbow Valley, three communities that previously enjoyed largely individual representation at council.
I’m running because I have the caliber and character to unite and effectively represent the residents straight away.
Caliber can be defined as: the level and value of a person’s abilities.
I’m well versed in corporate finance, governance, planning & budgeting, leadership, culture, financial reporting, consensus building, rapidly scaling operations up and down, and all aspects
of being a corporate director of a publicly traded company. As founder, president and CEO I did as much as possible with the resources available, a constant requirement of any government.
Character can be defined as: the combination of qualities in a person that makes them distinct from others.
Over the years on the family farm near Grande Prairie I participated in grain harvest, fencing, mechanics, heavy equipment operation and livestock management. Hunting, quadding, sports and Nintendo were constant pastimes.
At 20, I worked at Weyerhaeuser and became the production coordinator in the Sawmill and ran pre-shift departmental meetings, tracked downtime, made frequent operational judgment calls, and produced production reports for head office in Tacoma WA. I was also heavily involved with numerous practical jokes and was the only person that dressed up for Halloween 3 years in a row, because consistency matters.
My outgoing nature lent itself well to my next endeavour, opening a restaurant with my good friend. We enjoyed marketing accolades, becoming a social epicenter, and managing a small business that operated from 7am – 3am most days of the week. That business continues today, and I certainly felt their stress and frustration over the duration of the Covid pandemic.
I have lived in Calgary/Bragg Creek since 2007, the last 6 in Bragg Creek and the 8 previous in Discovery Ridge. My wife is a lawyer in Calgary, and we have 2 dogs and a cat that thinks he’s a dog. When we aren’t working, a campsite or ski hill in Kanaskis/ Banff are considered home away from home. We are outdoor enthusiasts.
Community can be defined as: a diverse group of people living in the same locality and under the same government.
The residents of the all-new Division 1 in Rocky View County have incredible common interests, and through the arranged marriage created by redrawn electoral borders, unique priorities.
As we creep into a post Covid economy, Rocky View County will need agility, resiliency, intelligence, and some charisma to absorb the shockwaves caused by macro economic imbalance, anxious provincial and federal counterparts, inflation, and the new work from home reality. Unusual times indeed.
To keep up with my campaign you can check out www.brentd1.com and you will see me soon. There is lots to talk about and I want to hear your perspective on the issues and opportunities.
Caliber – Character – Community
