BIG COUNTRY SENIOR SPORTS SOCIETY – ALBERTA 55 PLUS

It has been a busy Fall with many qualifiers for the Winter Provincial Games being held in all areas of the zone. Usually there is one town or area that hosts the Winter Games, but as no one stepped forward to host in 2024, the various events will be held in Cochrane, Okotoks, Strathmore, Camrose, St. Albert, Vermilion and Edmonton.

In the Strathmore Pickleball qualifier, Bob Cheyne and Norma Dawson from High River won the 75+ mixed and in the 70+ mixed Darlene Williamson, Cochrane and Norm Veinneau, Airdrie – Gold; Mayruth and Bill Guenter, Three Hills – Silver; and Karen Binns and Bob Poole, Strathmore – Bronze.

Darts was held in Calgary along with Zone 3 and Blossom Braganza of Cochrane won 55+ Ladies and Sundre’s Betty Ann Fountain won the 65+ Ladies. In 65+ Men, Gold went to Cochrane’s Greg Braganza, Silver to Robert Palmer from Chestermere and Bronze to Jim Storch from Drumheller. The 75+ Men Gold was won by Sundre’s Dave Formstone and Silver by Lee Edwards from Cochrane.

In Floor Curling the winning 55+ team from Sundre was made up of Gayle Meanner, Betty Milford, Bobby Douglas and Jerry Leussink. In the 70+ category the Didsbury/Olds team of Pat and Tom Bartholow and Dave and Nettie Neustaeter won Gold and Airdrie’s Arnold Kurz, Gisele Hache, Myrtle Brewster and Edmond Hache got Silver.

Snooker was held Nov 18th in Drumheller. Advancing to Camrose in 55+ will be James Roberts from High River and in 70+ Jon Hansen, from Olds. Second place was Dave Eberth of Drumheller and Third place was Dave Daly of Drumheller.

Sturling was held in Strathmore on November 25th and in the 70+ category, Gold went to Myrna Fink and James Kimball from Cochrane, Silver to Carson Schultz and Daryl Hunt of Airdrie, and Bronze to Dick Frayn and Ed Beaudin from Strathmore. In 50 + the Gold went to Joss Binns and Jim Adair from Strathmore and the Silver to Fred Sweere and Gus Cammer of Strathmore.

The Ice Curling qualifier was held in Cochrane December 1-3 with seventeen teams competing.
