Well, it’s been not a bad start to the Fall season with a fair amount of rain and sunshine. The days are getting shorter but let’s hope the snow will hold off for a while.
Beneath the Arch concert series is pleased to present The Fugitives on October 17. Performing folk and Americana with wondrous harmonies and storytelling, The Fugitives are the winners of seven Canadian Folk Music Awards and this promises to be an awesome show. Another fantastic show is Jack Semple plays Lightfoot on October 17 as well. Semple is a Saskatchewan born composer and musician, and has won a Juno and a Western Canadian music award. I love Gordon Lightfoot’s music and Semple is a master at his craft and an amazing guitarist. The Oilfields Curling Club is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. They will be hosting an Open House on October 17 at 1:30 at the Rink in Black Diamond. Past and present members as well as anyone interested in curling are welcome to come. The event will feature on ice “try curling” sessions and demonstrations. The Sheep Creek Weavers Club is is celebrating 50 years of Fibre Art this year. They will be hosting their annual Fibre Arts Sale on October 17 and 18 at the Millarville Racetrack Hall from 10-4. There will be hand crafted items for sale, local fibre artists to talk to, raffles, and fibre arts demonstrations. I watched them at the Millarville Fair last year, from the raw wool to weaving and finished products, and it was pretty interesting to watch the process. Also at the Millarville Racetrack will be their Halloween Howl on October 24. Put together a costume and your family and friends for an evening of pot luck, pumpkin carving contest, games, a haunted house, costume parade, adult drinks, and more. If you are a 55+ Foothills resident in a lower tax bracket, you may qualify for subsidized transportation. This program is for medical appointments, social outings, or essential needs. You must be a resident of the Foothills and have an income no greater than $45,000 or $55,000 for a couple. Effective October 1st, the province is enacting a wider list of materials to be recycled in the blue bins. This will include flexible plastic and films, empty aerosol containers, foam packaging, paper laminates like coffee cups and ice cream containers, and glass containers. Items must be clean and dry, and placed loosely in the bins. The exception is shredded paper which should be ina plastic bag. This system is fully funded by producers and companies supplying packaging and paper products. The blue bins will be picked up on Thursdays. For full details, please visit circularmaterials.ca/AB.
