Chapter 194
Waking early to step outside and ogle a bright pink haze of sky to the south-west, then gifted with a few random drops of rain followed by a pink rainbow through aforementioned haze…what a glorious way to start a day.
Coming home to cruise into my parking space looking over the long stretch of still lush green grass that is abundant this year, I am faced with a stunning young buck, fuzzy antlers aloft… he stares at me momentarily mesmerized before turning tail and showing me the waving white flag of his derriére.

Driving down to the barn to offer a workshop/demo on some of the magical things we can do with our horses… a young black bear lollops up out of the greenery on the north side of the road, pausing to glance at me over his shoulder, he ambles across into the dense bush and trees to the south.
Taking a walk down the road amid stillness… watching the bluebirds fly from stump to post to sky and beyond. Listening to wind tickle trees. Seeing the remnants of a deer… a fraction of a lower jawbone, teeth intact…evidence of the ongoing cycle of life and death that hums along all around us, largely unseen.
An excursion to Okotoks one Saturday evening, driving through pouring rain – unusual for our Septembers for sure – I spend a happy couple of hours listening to an amazing man creating soul-stirring music with an assortment of beautiful instruments from ancient Indian classical- inspired confections to cigar box guitars, all wrapped up in a coat of blues and delivered with a somewhat whimsical ease.
Having the great good fortune to live, work and play in the Foothills. Grateful for the beauty that surrounds us, that is our duty to preserve, not exploit. It’s an awesome treat to be able to share some of the seemingly magical aspects of my work with others. A new client recently made my heart swell as I watched her eyes light up, the dawning of a new understanding… quite delicious really.
Today another pair of russet beauties. Deer, barely out of their spotted pyjamas, stalked across the road before me, each taking time to stop and stare back at me as I stare at them, then they disappear between the trees, masked within seconds by the orange hues of their coats blending with the season’s changing leaves.
Beyond our borders life is so very different. Living and working in different countries and cultures brings a different perspective to daily life here. We are in a unique position in this amazing country of Canada. Keep the faith, look forward not back, find ways to be helpful…as has been said many times before if you see a job that needs doing, that job is yours. A simple concept that might be argued against, but at its root it is so true. Pick up the litter. Share a hug or a smile. Give someone something they need.
When you give, what is given is returned manyfold. If you are reading these words, you are one of us. We are rich beyond understanding.
Bliss you.
