United Library Services have received information about tariff measures affecting the publishing industry. The tariff code is 4901.99.00 should you wish to know more. The tariffs will be on books printed in the U.S. as of April the 1st. 2025. There is strong opposition to these tariffs by Canadian libraries because they fear that access to global thought and culture will be curtailed at a time of political unrest. And when thoughts and ideas should be promoted and shared around the world.
Congratulations to Cathy Shields, winner of our “Bookworm” contest. We enjoyed having our young patrons over the spring break. Our Scavenger Hunt, Bingo and silly egg activities were a great success. New to the library is Our Trappers Cabin I Spy. Small prizes will be awarded to those who find all items listed.
A big thank you to Pastor Brian for his generous donation of hockey trading cards that will be used for Bingo prizes. And thank you to our volunteers who worked the Highway Cleanup. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we could not do it without you.
An important and very moving novel has resurfaced: Crooked Cross by Sylvia Carson (1934). It is a chilling warning about the horrors of Nazi Germany. After Carson’s death in 1941, her book sank into obscurity. The book is about a family, and is not only of facts, but of the feelings they had about the facts.
Another good read is: There Comes a Time by Jean Herriman.
Jean is a longtime resident of Longview and surrounding area. At 96, she lives in High River. In the book of poems, sketches and writings, she shares the stories of her and her families lives in a rural Alberta. It is a very refreshing and tale for a rainy day.
