Councillor Update – Barb Castell – MD Foothills – Aug 2024

Barb Castell – Division 3

Summer is here!!! Rain, heat, thunderstorms, mosquitoes, and gardening.

July’s extreme heat spell was felt all over Alberta. As a result, I have been getting all my chores done before 6 a.m. My horses have been pleasantly surprised, they are now receiving breakfast at 5 a.m.

Foothills County/Diamond Valley Intermunicipal
The very first meeting of the Foothills County/Diamond Valley Intermunicipal Committee was held since the Diamond Valley amalgamation of Black Diamond and Turner Valley took place. We met on June 25 to go over the Terms of Reference and appoint Reeve Delilah Millar and Mayor Barry Crane as the committee co- chairs. Councillors Cindy Holladay and I are also on the committee.

Foothills County – Aldersyde Water Treatment Plant
At our last meeting on July 3, Council approved the award for the construction of the Aldersyde Water Treatment Plant to Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd. as recommended by Associated Engineering. This project has been in the planning process for a long time. The Aldersyde Water Treatment Plant is very necessary for Foothills County and our industrial corridor.

Square Butte Community Hall
On July 2, I attended a fantastic music event, A Night in the Mountains at Square Butte Community Hall. We were entertained by Jed and the Valentine, Brianna Lizotte, and Abigayle Kompst. A compilation of songs and music had us all singing along to County Roads at the end.

As some of you may have heard, the hall was badly damaged in February. It was great to see the transformation now that most of the repairs have been completed. My compliments to the hard-working team that designed, planned, organized, worked, and poured their heart and soul into this amazing space. Special thanks to President Shanna Ball Dunne, Treasurer Becky Wiens, past President Clayton Foster, and all those volunteers for seeing the project through from beginning to end. Congratulations!

Sheep Creek School
The lost sign for the Sheep Creek School has been found and installed. Sheep Creek School was a one room school located west of the Hamlet of Millarville from 1928 to 1950. It was moved to the hamlet where it has been renovated and had many much- needed additions as the population grew. The Foothills County Historical committee is working on a map of all the one-room schools in Foothills County. I will keep you posted.
