Longview Library – Mar 2022

Forty years ago, on February 6th, 1976 the official opening of the Longview Community Library was held in the Longview Elementary School. Roy Russell was mayor, Don Tannas, principal of the school and Board member. Other board members were Mrs. Mary Andrews, Mr. Baranek and Mrs. Russell, chairman. To start things off, the Russells donated 1300 books.

The TD Summer Reading Club’s 2022 theme is “Once Upon a Time: Myths and Legends”. Lynda, our librarian, will send out a recommended reading list in the last report card of the year.

Celia Dewane’s book, Stories From the Rocking Chair, is for sale now in the library for $20.00. Celia is a long time resident of Longview and many of her stories are about Longview and the surrounding area.

Freedom to Read Week was from February 20-26. It is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A stricking abuse of these rights is the burning of the Harry Potter and Twilight novels in Tennessee, by a pastor, Greg Locke. He also banned a graphic novel about the Holocaust. The week provides us all with the opportunity to focus on the issues of intellectual freedom, whether you are a librarian, teacher or a member of the community.

February was Black History Month. It is an invitation for Canadians to honour the legacy of Black Canadian writers. It’s theme this year is “February and Forever, Celebrating Black History, ToDay and Everyday.” The CBC has compiled a list of 28 very accomplished Black Canadian authors whom you would enjoy.

A good read is Greenwich Park, by Katherine Faulkner, an award winning journalist. It is a psychological thriller about a strange, brazen woman who slithers into the lives of an unsuspecting family, playing havoc with them all, and culminating in a brutal murder.

Happy Reading!
